Post Office Closures
On 17 May 2007 in response to a national 12 week public consultation process, the government announced it's policy on the future of the Post Office Network.
The Government announced compulsory closure of up to 2,500 branches, out of the current network of around 14,300 branches. For further details click here
After undertaking a Surrey-wide sustainablity review, the Post Office announced their proposals for closures in Elmbridge on 29 January 2008. The High Street branch in Claygate has been earmarked for closure.
Claygate currently does have another branch. However, as reported by the 'Esher News & Mail' (click here for full article), Colin Wheatley of the Elmbridge Access Group notes that at this alternative Post Office branch in the village, disabled access is problematic. He has called for the Post Office to improve access by installing a permanent ramp at the alternate Post Office branch.
There is to be a local public consultation that will last for a period of six weeks, the closing date for feedback is 10 March 2008
